American Eagle Gold is an official United States gold bullion coin, released in 1986 by the United States Mint and authorized by the 1985 Gold Bullion Coin Act. American Eagle Gold coins come in 1/10, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 troy oz denominations, with the 1 oz American Eagle Gold Bullion coin having a gross weight of 33.93 grams and a face value of $50. American Eagle Gold Bullion coins have a purity of 0.9167 and are 22 karat. The design of the Liberty, which appeared on the $20 Saint-Gauden in 1907, was selected as the design for the American Eagle Gold Coin. In addition to your standard American Eagle Gold Coin as bullion, there are American Gold Eagle proof coins. American Gold Eagle Proof coins undergo a specialized minting process which is different from the standard bullion minting. The gold proof coins also come in different denominations, like their bullion counterpart. We also offer these proof coins as a set. The American Eagle Gold Proof coin is sealed in a protective capsule, mounted in a velvet case, and enclosed with a Certificate of Authenticity. The American Eagle Gold Proof is minted by the United States Mint, and subsequently each coin’s specifications — its weight, purity, etc. — is backed by the United States Government. However, because it is a proof coin, it is in turn a collector’s item and so it cannot be confiscated.
