The $2½ Liberty (aka The Coronet Liberty) first appeared in 1838 and was designed by Christian Gobrecht, although the denomination was first introduced and authorized by a Congressional act in 1792. There were six different variations until Gobrecht came up with his Coronet Liberty design. This design type was used for 68 years until the Indian Head design was introduced in 1908. The obverse (front) depicts Lady Liberty with her hair in a bun, and she is wearing a coronet inscribed with the word “Liberty”.
