The obverse of this beautiful coin features the face of France’s “Lady Liberty,” a symbol that represents the nations Third Republic (Currently in the Fifth Republic) , which spanned from 1870 (Napoleon the III was defeated in the Franco Prussian war) until World War II. Encircling her head are the words “REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE.” The reverse of this coin is represented by the fully plumed Gallic Rooster, a symbol of France’s revolutionary fighting spirit which was taken from Medieval French imagery and was used as a banner of the French Revolution. One can now find the rooster on French stamps and the insignia of French national sports teams, it is also represent Vigilance among the French.
